The focus of my research is to find novel dietary means to reduce the risk of chronic disorders, such as type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancers; and to study the interactions between dietary factors and genes affecting these diseases. We are also investigating mechanisms involved in the placental transfer of long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (such as DHA and ARA) to the fetus in order to improve fetal DHA status not only in uncomplicated pregnancies but also in disorders associated with poor DHA status, such as gestational diabetes mellitus or intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) as well as premature babies. In addition, the anti-thrombotic properties of fruits and vegetables are being investigated using in vitro and ex vivo systems. Our research hopefully will provide novel insight into their effects of nutrients on health and disease.
