[6. June 2013] Jon Swenson (UMB) and I have applied and succeeded to become invited to Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters for the academic year 2015/16. Our proposal are entitled "Climate effects on harvested large mammal populations". It is generous funding (3.3 mill for a year) to bring in national and international colleagues to work together closely for a year.
We will also soon hire a PhD (seated at UMB) to start working on some of the topics for the project.

[4. June 2013] Knut Madslien defended his thesis entitled "Deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) and moose (Alces alces) - interactions between an invading ectoparasite, a host and the environment" - work being done at the Veterinary institute. Main supervisor Bjørnar Ytrehus, with Hildegunn Viljugrein, J.Godfroid, Erling J. Solberg and myself as cosupervisors.

[15. May 2013] Inger Maren Rivrud defended her thesis entitled "Space use, climate and selective harvesting of red deer" with great success. Opponents were Iain J. Gordon and Nils Bunnefeld. Congratulations!

[16. Nov. 2011] Two new projects granted by NFR - Miljø 2015. I am only a participant on these.

"Managing ecosystem services in low alpine cultural landscapes through livestock grazing" (Project leader Gunnar Austrheim). A follow-up of the sheep grazing projects, with me taking a minor role, retiring as a PI.

"LAND: At the interface between science and policy for large carnivores: science for policy, science of policy, and science in policy" (Project leader John Linnell). I am not sure I will remember (or that I understand) the title, apart from the fact that it was something with science and policy...

Field season in Hol has ended. With this - 10 years of experimentation is over - and 3 NFR projects ++. Soon 30 papers have been published based on the field data collected. I will soon retire as a sheep researcher, but do have data for quite a few more publications....

[May 2010] Leif Egil Loe got the Associate Professor position in wildlife management at UMB, Ås. Congratulations!!!

Leif Egil was my first PhD, and we have had a fruitful collaboration for a decade. This is well deserved! I do hope the collaboration will continue!

Jonas defended his thesis "Temporal and spatial variation in predation on roe deer fawns" with success! Main supervisor has been Petter Kjellander at Grimsö, Sweden, while I was part of the supervisor team. Opponent was Steve Côté. 

[15. December 2009] Defense of Richard Bischof

Richard Bischof defended his thesis entitled "Selective harvesting: short- and long-term consequences for wild populations and their management" with great success! Main supervisor has been Jon Swenson (UMB), while Nigel Yoccoz and myself were co-supervisors. Opponents were Fanie Pelletier and Steve Redpath, whom made this a good show!

[16. June 2009] Omtale av beiterapportern for Hardangervidda i Nationen. Oppslaget, som ikke ble vist oss på forhånd, er delvis misvisende. Kartleggingen til Rekdal et al. viser at det også på Hardangervidda er områder hvor det er grunnlag for å spørre om beitetrykket er vel høyt (avhengig av målsetting). Det er altså variasjon mellom beitelag på dette punktet, selv om vidda som sådan har relativt mye beiteressurser som ikke er utnyttet.

[April 2009] Anders Nielsen has been offered the 3 year position as post doc on the new SauKlim project, and he will start on 1. July.

[27. February 2009] PhD defense Marianne Evju

Marianne Evju defended with great success her thesis "Sheep grazing and dynamics of alpine plants in a landscape-scale experiment". Congratulations! She has recently (1. Jan. 2009) started as a full time researcher in NINA.
