  • 2004: Evaluated  in May 2004 a program in peace education in Bosnia-Herzegovina for DEZA, sveitsisk utviklingshjelp. Together with Ronald Greber from University of Bern.I was the team leader.  
  • 2004/2005: On a stock-taking review mission on the use of mother tongue and bilingual education in Africa on contract from ADEA/GTZ/UNESCO. From the end of November 2004 until mid May 2005. Work continued through all of 2005.

  • Research grant in l975 from the Council for Peace and Conflict studies to do a study on the stereotypes children hold of other nations.
  • Three year research grant from the Ministry of Education,
  • l976-l979 to conduct a study on innovations in schools.The main questions for study were:Why do schools develop so differently even when they have the same resources and are in the same area? What characterizes innovative schools?
  • Three year research grant from the Norwegian Research Council for the Humanities (NAVF),l986-l989 to study the education mothers and fathers give their sons.Is there any difference in the ideals and practices of feminist mothers of sons from those of more traditional mothers? Or in the ideals and practices of more traditional fathers compared to those fathers who have worked with changing their male role and have spent more time than normal with their sons?
  • Research grant l989/90 from the educational Division,NORAD, to conduct the research project:Future expectations of high- achieving secondary school girls".
  • Travel grants from the Norwegian Foreign Ministry to partici- pate in the conferences of the International Peace Research Association in Gyor, Hungary in l983, in Sussex, UK in l986 and in Rio, Brazil l988 and in the UN Special Session for Disarmament, New York l982.
  • Travel grant from NORAD to participate in the UN Women Decade Conference in Nairobi l985.
  • A DAAD scholarship for two months in the fall of l991 to sit working on the manuscript "Recolonization of the African brain" in Hamburg, Germany. I had an office at the UNESCO Institute of Education, a guest research flat in "Gästehaus der Universität Hamburg" and got good assistance from "Institut für Afrikakunde". Numerous other smaller travel grants from the Institute for Educational Research, from the Norwegian Research Council for the Humanities, from the Nordic Committtee on Peace Research and from the Foreign Ministry.

SABBATICALS, LEAVES OF ABSENCE

  • In the fall of l968 I had a study leave from my job as Lecturer at Tromsø Teacher's College and a scholarship to study teacher training in Sweden, at Malmø Teacher's College. That leave resulted in the book: Praktisk Pedagog- ikk i Lærerstudiet. Oslo: Aschehoug. l970.
  • In the fall of l980 I had a sabbatical leave from the University of Oslo and it was used to write the book: Ungdomsskoler i utvikling.Universitetsforlaget.l98l.
  • In the academic year l98l/l982 I had an unpaid leave of absence from the University of Oslo and had the position of Researcher at the Peace Research Institute of Oslo.This is where I started the work on: Educating for Peace.A feminist Perspective. New York: Pergamon Press.l985.
  • I had another sabbatical leave in the academic year l986/ l987 I was a Visiting Professor in Sweden at the University of Umeå and in the US for part of the time and also wrote my doctoral thesis which was published in August l989 under the title: Feminist Perspectives on Peace and Peace Education. Pergamon Press.l989.
  • Since the fall of l987 until January 1992 I worked at the Faculty of Education at the University of Dar es Salaam under an arrangement partly paid by the University of Oslo and partly by the Norwegian Development Agency,NORAD.
  • I had a sabbatical from the University of Dar es Salaam in the fall of l991 and spent three months of it at the UNESCO Institute of Education in Hamburg, Germany on a DAAD scholarship. Started writing "Recolonization of the African mind."
  • I had leave without pay from the University of Oslo in the first part of l992 and spent the first part of it doing first an evaluation study for NORAD and then one for the Teacher College in Malmö, Sweden. The last three months of that term I spent as a Visiting Professor of peace studies at the University of Antioch, Ohio.
  • Research leave - October 1993. I spent four weeks at the UNESCO Institute of Education, Hamburg working on the manuscript the "Recolonization of the African mind."
  • Leave with pay in the fall term of 1995. I spent one month of the time at the UNESCO Institute of Education, Hamburg, one month lecturing at four universities in South Africa and one month doing a consultancy in Namibia.
  • Research leave - October 1997. I spent four weeks at the UNESCO Institute of Education, Hamburg working on the book on the "Recolonization of the African mind."

  • Gave a three hour workshop at the Norwegian University of Sports on Wednesday the 18th of February 1998 on: "Intellectual recolonization of Africa - especially in the field of sports."
  • Gave an invited key-note lecture at the CESE conference in Groningen, Holland on the 7th of July on "The Nordic dimension in education - does it exist? Where are the Nordic countries heading?"
  • 27 July 1998 - International Summer school, University of Oslo, four hour seminar on: "Language of instruction in Africa" and "The role of the universities in Sub-Saharan Africa".
  • Peace education in an era of globalization. Lecture given at Universitat Internacional de Menorca, Spain on Friday 18 September 1998. 22pp.
  • Taught a week's course on "peace education and socialization" in the Master of Peace Studies programme at the University of Peace in Stadtschlaining, Austria, 27 - 31 of October 1998.
  • Gave an invited key-note lecture at the Norwegian Educational research conference at Lillehammer, Norway on the 18th of November 1998 on "Norsk utdanning i et globaliseringsperspektiv" (Norwegian Education in the era of globalization).
  • Gave a talk on "fredskorpsere som brobyggere" (the Peace Corps workers as bridge builders between cultures) at the Jubilee seminar of the Peace Corps 11.December 1998.
  • 9 July 1999 - International Summer school, University of Oslo, four hour seminar on: "Language of instruction in Africa" and "The role of the universities in Sub-Saharan Africa".
  • Taught a week's course on "peace education in an era of globalization" in the "Summer School on Peace and Conflict" arranged by the University of Osnabrück, Germany July 11 - 16 1999.
