385 pupils are home educated in Norway 2001/2002

The number of home educated pupils in Norway is etimated to 385. That is the result of a research based counting of home educated pupils in Norway for the school-year 2001/2002.

The study has compared numbers of homeschooled educated registered in GSI – The Norwegian School Authorities Data System, with information directly from County School. Authorities, from Regional School Authorities, and from homeducators and home education networks.

A sample of 44 of total 436 counties is drawn. With different methods five estimates for the total national number of home educated pupils are calculated. These estimates are: 203, 325, 445, 706 and 1130. The most reasonable result is the mean of 325 and 445 = 385. The National Department of Education registration through GSI ends up with 109 home educated pupils in Norway in 2001/2002.

There are most home educated pupils in rural areas in the south-, west-, middle- and north-districts of Norway. The strongest increase last year is in North-Norway. Few home educated pupils are registered in Oslo. There are "some" information about rapid increase in home education in Oslo, but such increase is not documented in this study.
