Illustrators of the Snark

The Bellman

Cover illustration, Henry Holiday (1876)

This page is an attempt to provide a listing of illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s famous epic poem “The Hunting of the Snark”.

I am to a large extent indebted to Selwyn H. Goodacre’s paper “The Listing of the Snark”, which has been included in “The Annotated Hunting of the Snark“ by Martin Gardner.

Minor parts of this list are my own humble work of research, based on the impregnable scientific method of sporadic Google™ searching.

I have added some links to various websites containing samples of the illustrations. If you are a copyright holder to any of this, who do not approve of the link from this page, please let me know and the link will be removed as soon as possible.

This page contains two tables. The first table lists published, illustrated editions of The Hunting of The Snark, in various languages. The second table, at the bottom of the page, reference other artwork attributed to The Hunting of the Snark.

Please tell me about other Snark illustrators of your knowledge! And let me know if any of this information is wrong. E-mail address at the bottom of this page.

Michael Sporn 1989 Michael Sporn Animation Inc. made the film, “The Hunting of the Snark & Jabberwocky”. Sporn also keeps a splog, (which to me looks very much like a blog). Peggy Guest 2003 Peggy A. Guest, American artist, have made these illustrations for The Hunting of the Snark: www.peggyguest.com/illustration.html.
Allan P Williams 2005 This is a book, with illustrations, inspired by the Snark. Quoting froms the book catalogues:
Lewis Carroll’s long nonsense poem, “The Hunting of the Snark”, about 10 bachelors on a journey of discovery, is here depicted as a sexual journey of discovery, darkly overshadowed by the danger of AIDS.

Michael Capozzola 2005 According to his own profile presentation at www.pbase.com: “By night, Michael Capozzola is a comedian. In the daylight hours, he works as a freelance surveillance caricaturist, “shadowing” people for clients and creating exquisite pen & ink renderings of their covert lives.”
