Chapter 3. Practice frames the collaborative, interdisciplinary and,
in many ways, contradicting practice of Extended
and the main multimodal issues raised and explored through the making
of the four, multimedia performance pieces. A brief historical contextualisation
of multimedia performance will precede the presentation of the collaborative
practice and the pieces. Chapter 4. Theory responds to the major research
question put forward in this thesis: How
may practice-based methods inform studies of digital media?
Practice based method will be elaborated in this chapter by means
of my own practice from Extended
in addition to what I consider central assertions on practice based
method made by media-related theoretical perspectives. The final section
in this chapter, Section 4.4 “Artifacts of expression and expressive
artefacts. Exploring theory through practice” addresses the
second research questions: How may the
interplay between practice and theory be conceptualised? Through
a concise and close analysis and reflection of exploring theory through
practice, I conceptualise the dynamic between theory and practice
by way of the concept artifact.
This is a concept derived from the arguably more process-oriented
and explorative field of art and design research and refined by notions
of artifact in activity theory related literature (e.g. Wartofsky
1979). The final, Chapter 5. Conclusion and further discussion, recapitulates
the findings in the previous two chapters and direct attention to
the links between them. Contextual factors when reviewing collaborative
experimental context of practice-based method are emphasised as a
result. A more developed understanding and distinct definition of
practice-based method follows. I conclude the chapter by preparing
the ground for further discussion.
To enter these chapters and their reflexive reasoning, I have found
it necessary to situate the thesis in research contexts and discussions
I consider relevant to practice-based method in the following Chapter
2. Method as field of discussion. This, I hope, will frame, prepare
and accompany the reading of the following chapters and sections.
