2. method as field of discussion

2.1 the practice of this practice-based study. Extended

2.3 form and structure adapted to practice-based mode

To approach the interplay of theory and practice through a thesis based on the same dynamic has been a challenging task. In turn, this has led to a widespread reflection with a somewhat unconventional form and structure. To alter or accommodate conventional forms and structures of academic reflection is in line with post-critical approach to media learning. In Making Media Buckingham et al. question the value of the formal, written and post-production self-evaluation in which the integration of theory and practice is expected to be achieved. The authors call attention to how reflection of this kind needs to be seen as an integral and essential part of the process, rather than a mere bolt-on extra designed to meet the needs of examiners. “Practice has to be more than a mere application of theory, or an alternative way of demonstrating pre-determined theoretical positions” (Buckingham et al. 1995: 12). As a consequence, form and structure of the reflection performed ought to be negotiated and found adequate in a practice-based mode of inquiry.
