2.4.1 Context-sensitive adaptation
of theory
Interdisciplinarity needs a careful adaptation sensitive to the traditional
context of the theoretical perspectives. In “Research into the
development of digital media as an interdisciplinary field based in
the sciences and the humanities”, Liestøl stress the
need “(…) to prepare and contextualise the various topics
and traditions involved” when performing interdisciplinary research
into digital media (2001: 42).
Apart from maybe the specific field of dance & technology and
directed litterature on creative, practice-based exploration of digital
media, the conventional objects of analysis of the applied theories
differ in crucial ways from Extended.
Activity theory (e.g. Engeström 2001) deals with learning, not
creative development in particular. Performance studies (e.g.Schechner
2002) dwells on marginal art forms that in many ways inhabit a resistance
to analysis or critical reflection. Traditional scenography (e.g.
Cheesmond 1999) deals with static objects to support the live performance,
not dynamic digital media which might be said to interact with the
live performance in a much more present way. Multimedia theory is
not a well-defined theoretical tradition, but may be considered an
emerging theoretical field of exploration into digital, multimodal
and often interactive media-forms (Fibiger 1997:9). The multimedia
theory presented in this thesis, perhaps more appropriately termed
“digital media theory”, derives for the most part from
web-related theory (Fagerjord 2003).
As I will return to in section
4.4, interdisciplinary theoretical knowledge is adapted, both
into the production process and the postproduction reflection. There
is a need for collaboratory agreed work-terms and context-sensitive
and precise definitions, respectively. I consider the adapted and
slightly customised concepts and terms a result of the potential diversity
of digital media forms - the other side of interdisciplinarity or
disciplinary convergence (Liestøl & Morrison 2001:2), that
of divergence. The animations used in Extended
are made using Flash software,
but the way the animations are applied
in the performance-context can hardly be understood within the theoretical
frames of interactive and dynamic web-applications, which is the traditional
use of Flash-software. Because of the extencive disciplinary convergence
and divergence present in this practice-based thesis, central terms
need to be specified.
