Improved Traditional Medicines

ITM's are improved traditional herbal preparations which show effect in both humans and in vitro bio-essays, and are non-toxic as shown by animal models. Dr Rokia Sanogo has written several monographies of the different plants that are included in these herbal remedies. She is a  Professor in Pharmacognosy at Faculty of Medicine Pharmacy and Odontostomatology of University of Bamako and she assist the DMT in the field of improved traditional remedies.


Malarial

Malarial - against malaria

This remedy is a mixture of three different plants; Cassia occidentalis, Lippia chevalierii and Spilanthes oleracea. The bag consist of 11 smaller bags of 10g each, enough for one treatment. One bag is boiled with 0,5L of water for 10 minutes. Let it cool down with a piece of lemon and sugar. This should be drunk every morning and evening the first 4 days, after this drink this only one time every day for 3 days.

Gastrocedal

Gastrosedal - against stomach ulcer and gastritis

This remedy consists of the dried powdered roots of Vernonia kotschyana. The bag contain 225 g of the powder. One teaspoon is mixed with a half glass of cold water and drunken before each meal. A PhD is now working with this traditional medicine. She is looking into differences between the cultivated and the domesticated roots, and also between different stages of development.

bal

Balembo - cough syrup for children and adults

This remedy is a syrup made from the berries of the bush Crossopteryx febrifuga. The flask contain 100 ml of the syrup. This is the most sold ITM manufactured at the DMT.

Hepatisan

Hepatisan - against hepatitis

This remedy is made of the leaves of Combretum micranthum. The bag contains 14 smaller bags of 10g dried and powdered material. The material of one bag is boiled for 10 minutes with 0,5L of water. The filtrated is drunken. This is done morning and evening. Indication according to the bag: manifestations of hepatic incuficens with bile problems, intolerance to fat, constipation, nausea and lack of appetite.

Laxa

Laxa-cassia - against constipation

This remedy is made the leaves of Cassia italica. The bag contains 10 smaller bags with 5g of dried and powdered material. One bag is boiled with 0,5L of water for 10 minutes and the filtrate is drunken after the evening meal. C. italica contain anthraquinones, substances known to have laxative properties. Its effect has been shown in in vivo animal studies. Frequent and long term use of this product can lead to serious weakening of the intestinal canal, and it can also lead to dependence of laxatives.

dys

Dysenteral - against dysentery and constipation

This remidy is made by the aerial part of Euphorbia hirta. The bag contains 9 smaller bags à 10g. One bag is boiled with 0,5L of water for 10 minutes and the filtrate is drunken after each meal.

Sporo

Psorospermin - against eczema

This ointment contains an extract of the roots of Psorospermum guineenseand vaselinum album. To treat eczema, apply the ointment 2 times every day until healed.

Coumbesan

Koumbesane - against cough, diarrhoea and adaptogenic

This remedy is made from dried leaves from Guiéra senegalensis. The bag contains 30 smaller bags and one bag is boiled with 0,5L of water for 10 minutes. The decoction is filterd and drunken. This should be done morning and night until one feels better.

Sumafura Tiemoko Bengaly - against malaria (not complicated)

This remedy is not yet an ITM. The active plant in this remedy is the leaves of Argemone mexicana. The bag contains 21 smaller bags with 30g dried leaves. One bag should be boiled with 0,5L water for 30 minutes and filtered and drunk. This should be done three times a day for 7 days.
