Karin Lagesen's webpage

I am at present employed both as a post doc in the group of Kjetill Jakobsen at the Center for Ecological and Evolutionary Synthesis (CEES) at the University of Oslo, and as a researcher at the at the Oslo University Hospital, in Torbjørn Rognes' group.

Current projects

At the moment I am working on several different projects. I am involved with the Cod sequencing project which is ongoing at the CEES. I am also working on the sequencing and annotation of several microorganisms with a view of doing comparative studies - among these organisms are some Cyanobacteria and some Ecoli genomes.

Training

I was educated at the University of Bergen, where I took my Master in bioinformatics with Rein Aasland and Ingvar Eidhammer. I ended up with bioinformatics mostly because I never could decide whether biology or informatics was more fun. My education is thus within both fields, and in practice I have a bachelor's degree within both fields.

I got my doctorate from the University in Oslo in December of 2009, working within Rognes group. My Ph.D. project was on ribosomal RNAs. I developed a program called RNAmmer in collaboration with Professor David Ussery and Peter Hallin at the Center for Biological Sequence Analysis at the Technical University of Denmark. Using this program we mapped and characterized rRNAs in prokaryotic organisms.
