One of the main goals of my project is to determine if song of cross-fostered males differs from that of normally reared control males. To investigate this I have been out in the field with my tape recorder and parabolic microphone and recorded the song of both kind of males. The best time to record their song is at dawn, when the males sing outside their nest box until the female comes out. Often the pair copulates shortly after her appearance, and there is thus ample reasons for the male to do his best to impress the female during the dawn song. It is therefore also a very opportune period to record his song to be sure to obtain a good impression of his singing abilities.
