A chart of the nuclides with the black squares, representing the stable nuclei,
plotted as a function of the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
It also shows the limits of observation of nuclei, the drip-lines and the
astrophysical r- and rp-process pathways. The insets show Hubble Space
Telescope images of the nova Cygni 1992, a possible rp-process site,
and the afterglow of SN1987A, an r-process site. |
