STRUCTURE OF ERECHTHEION

More about the structure

The facade on the eastern sections pronaos had six Ionic columns, which height, including capital and base, rose to 6.58 metres. Six Ionic columns also comprise the northern porch. However, their height is 7.63 metres. These columns display entasis and meiosis (an architectural device whereby columns are thicker at the base and thinner at the top, an optical illusion), which is less discernable than that of the Parthenon). The design created by the crossing of the beams in the ceiling, must have created an truly striking impression. The richly decorated monumental entrance measures 4.88 metres by 2.42 metres.

Restoration work

There has been several conservation work on the Erechtheion. The last restoration project was completed in 1987 and made use of new marble components, with intention to create stability wherever the original stone was defective. During this work a number of of errors committed by previous restorers were corrected, where computer analysis of the stone made it possible to pinpoint it’s original location.
