"Evolution equations and elliptic operators"
Many physical, biological and even sociological phenomena can be described by evolution equations defined by elliptic operators. We first describe reasons for this universality. Then we discuss the initial problems of analysing linear elliptic operators with non-smooth coefficients and survey the structural results originally developed by John Nash and Ennio De Giorgi for non-degenerate systems. Then we discuss some recent results for degenerate systems in which new phenomena arise.
The talk will be at a general level and should be accessible to advanced undergraduates and postgraduate students.
