"Topological Linear Algebra."

In the algebraic topological setting the notion of a spectrum is the
analogue of an abelian group and the notion of a ring spectrum the
analogue of an ordinary ring. These notions are motivated by the study of
topological spaces: a spectrum represents a cohomology theory and a ring
spectrum represents a multiplicative cohomology theory. Recent advances in
the understanding of these objects makes it possible to incorporate linear
algebra concepts such as modules, traces and characteristic polynomials
into this setting. In this talk we shall give a non-technical introduction
to this circle of ideas and discuss the relevance for algebraic K-theory.
