Rijeka was until recently the largest port of Croatia (presently, it is Split) with over 250 thousand inhabitants. It lies on the northern part of the coast at the start of the Istrian peninsula, 60 km away from Trieste, Italy, and 30 km from Slovenian border. These pictures were taken in spring 2005 from the window of Zlatko's home. The top picture is a view towards South-East. Sequentially downwards, the view moves to South-West.

The Bizantine empire and Venetia left traces in the countryside, as well as Western Roman Empires. In more recent history, Austro-Hungarian aristocracy built a unique residence area in the neighborhood, which is present-day Opatija. It is a tourist resort, surpassing even Dubrovnik in attracting a large number of tourists, not only because its architectual heritage, but with modern entertainment business combined with natural beauty.
